Beautiful and Ethical – Your Fairtrade Wedding Jewellery by Erica Sharpe

Beautiful and Ethical – Your Fairtrade Wedding Jewellery by Erica Sharpe

It’s always a pleasure to work with brides- and grooms-to-be and I’ve been very fortunate over my career as a designer jeweller to make engagement rings, wedding rings and then even anniversary gifts for many couples. One of my areas of specialism is coloured gemstones, and I have noticed a trend for interesting and colourful gems emerging recently – in fact I have been commissioned by a lovely bride-to-be to make my Swan Ring (pictured) with a stunning marquise cut pariba tourmaline in a dazzling shade of turquoise. Swans pair for life, and the design features two swans entwined around the stone, their beaks delicately touching: the wedding band can be profiled to fit snugly next to the ring.

Closest to my heart however, are ethical standards in jewellery making and I am very proud to be certified by the Fairtrade Foundation to produce my designs in Fairtrade Silver, Gold and Platinum. I go to great lengths to ensure the stones that I use are ethically sourced. Earlier this year the Fairtrade Foundation launched a campaign entitled ‘I Do’ highlighting the availability of Fairtrade precious metals to couples choosing their wedding jewellery. If this is important to you, make sure your ask your jeweller about their sources or choose a jeweller displaying the Fairtrade Logo.

I am inspired by my customers’ stories and delighted to work on commissions incorporating their ideas. Often old family jewellery is included, remodelled to become part of the new story for a couple’s new life together and bringing the precious metals and stones into use for the next generation. It’s extra-special to personalise your rings with subtle meanings – for example the Cornish Tin in my Kerensa Collection is a popular choice for coastal weddings or those with connections to Cornwall – we even mail-ordered Kerensa wedding rings to a couple in Australia! The possibilities are endless – do get in touch if you have anything you would like to discuss.
